Experiencing God as Holy Spirit
- What does he do?

Each 'person' of God (Father, Son & Holy Spirit) is fully God, but each has a particular role to play. For example, Jesus, the Son, undertook our Salvation by becoming human, dying and rising again. We look here at something of what the Holy Spirit's particular role is.

This thread (Experiencing God as Holy Spirit):
  1. Who is the Holy Spirit?
  2. What does He do?
  3. What does He give?
  4. What does He achieve in us?
  5. How do I get more?

Sons & Daughters of God

John 1:12
Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God

Jesus gave every believer the right to become a child of God. It is the holy Spirit who puts this into effect, and convinces us that we are indeed sons and daughters of God.

Romans 8:14-16
14because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." 16The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.

Although written in masculine terms (son & sonship) this clearly applies to men and women.
In verse 15 the NIV has "Spirit of sonship", but the footnote says "Spirit of adoption". Discuss together the good aspects of adoption.
[Roman adoption involved legally becoming an heir to the family wealth as well as living within the family]

Health Inspector

John 16:8
When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:

When a person begins to realise that they might need Jesus, and as they become aware of their own sin and their need of salvation, this is a work of the Holy Spirit, 'convicting of sin'.
Think about your own experience of this.

What role does our conscience have?
Although everybody, Christian or not, has a conscience, the Holy Spirit works through it to prompt us about wrong things. He continues to give us a spiritual health check.

Guide & Strengthener

John 16:13.
But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

The Holy Spirit guides into all truth. He it is who puts thoughts in our minds, and helps us to 'know' what we should do. This is often how our prayers for guidance are answered. What is your own experience of this so far?

The Holy Spirit is called the Counsellor, or Advocate, or Comforter; (each of these translates a Greek word 'parakletos', which has all these shades of meaning). He strengthens, comforts and advises us.

Unifier

Ephesians 4:3-4.
3Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.4There is one body and one Spirit - just as you were called to one hope when you were called

The Holy Spirit brings unity - something we also have to work at and allow Him to bring about. There is One Spirit who brings unity.
One Christian writer produced a book about the Holy Spirit called "the go-between God". The Spirit is the link between us and the Father, and us and each other.
How important do you think this is?
