- God with us: the Way to the Father

Getting to know Jesus better is an important step. It is something that continues all through our life, but we need to make a start right at the outset.

God with us

Matthew 1:21-23 -
She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" - which means, "God with us."

Jesus was called 'Immanuel', which means 'God with us'. Why do you think He was called that?

When Jesus was born he was not just human, but God as well.
John 1:1 -
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God
John 1:14 -
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

'Word' here means Jesus. Think about all the things these verses say about Jesus, the Word.

 

Why did God become human?

John 1:18 -
No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.

What does this say that Jesus did?

It is important for us to be able to know God better, and so Jesus showed us what He is like. How does Jesus do this?

John 14:1-7 -
1"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. 2In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4You know the way to the place where I am going."
5Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?"
6Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him."

What do you think Jesus means when he says 'I am the way' (v 6)?

Suppose you want to get across a big river to the other side, what do you need?

A bridge is a way. It takes you across safely.

Jesus is the only way to get back into friendship with God as Father.
When we follow Jesus we become children of God - He becomes our Father. It is only by following Jesus that this can happen.
