Starting out
- Knowing God better

Any new friendship is a time of discovery, and all relationships needs to be worked at. How do we get better acquainted with God?

  5. Knowing other Christians better

How do we get better acquainted?

With a new friend, how do we get to know them better? Think about it for a moment.

Two key things are: finding out more about the person, and talking with and to the person.
To get better acquainted with God, what ways are there to find out more about Him, and to speak with and to him?

The Bible

This is the most important way we get to know about God.
Which of these descriptions best describe the bible?:
  • a single book
  • a collection of writings covering a long period of time
  • a collection of writings covering a short period of time
Find out - e.g. by counting in the index - how many books there are in the bible.

The bible is a record of how God has shown what He is like to human beings, and of how people have responded to Him. It starts with the beginning of time, but its earliest dateable history goes back to about 2000 BC, and the latest New Testament writing is as late as 100-200 AD.

2 Timothy 3:16 - All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work
Why is the bible (scripture) so useful?
For the bible to be God-breathed means God's life is in it and it is relevant for us today.

Reading the Bible

It is a good habit to read a bit of the bible every day. There are Bible reading notes available which give a short passage to read, and a few words of explanation and help. Our Church Book Rep. can supply these - e-mail us if you want to know more.

Praying

Every friendship needs conversation to keep it healthy. Prayer is how we talk to God.
Prayer is not a matter of fancy words. It is saying what we want to God. We use our own words. We are relaxed with God.
Prayer best includes the following:
  • praise
  • confession
  • thanksgiving
  • asking
What do you think each of these is about? We need to pray every day - and we can pray quick prayers any time any place.

As we become more comfortable praying, then meditation on God and what he has said, contemplation by quietly spending time with God, without necessarily talking, and listening to what God has to say to us, are also imortant.
