- Jesus is Saviour

Contrary to popular belief, a Christian is not a person who manages to be good. Rather, a Christian is someone who knows that he or she can never reach God's standard of goodness, and who knows he or she needs help. (Because Christians know that God has helped them, they try to live and behave as well as they can, so as to please God.)

Why did Jesus need to save us?

Romans 3:23 - all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God
Isaiah 53:6 - We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Do you think anyone can claim that they match up to God's idea of goodness?
1 John 1:8 - if we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us

Everyone is in the same boat - we have all sinned. In other words, we have not been good enough for God. (You can find in Genesis 3 the story of when human beings first disobeyed God)

What did Jesus save us from?

Romans 6:23: For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord
What do you think this says about the consequences of sin?

We needed to be saved from death?

What did Jesus save us to?

Romans 6:23 again: For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord
What does this say we receive from Jesus instead of death?

We needed to be able to live for ever as a friend and child of God.

How did Jesus save us?

Romans 5:6-8: You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

How did God deal with our sin?

Jesus who was innocent and good, took our place and died when he was executed on the cross. Because he died in our place, we can live for ever.

On the cross Jesus

  • died instead of us
  • forgave us for our sin (if we admit it)
  • defeated the devil
